Yeah, 3031 has been the primary powder I use in my .45-70 loads - and it will continue to be for hunting loads. I have gotten excellent accuracy using it behind a variety of different bullets. However, for fun plinking, I think these Trail Boss loads will be hard to beat! #

I use Oregon Trail laser cast without gas checks because they have a hardness between 22 and 24. I like unique better than trail boss, if you can find manuals from the 70's they are listed. The best book to get is 40 years with the 45-70 available on amazon. Its like the 45-70 bible and talks a lot about reduced and subsonic loads with unique. I have two distinctly different 45-70's in what they like to eat! Picked up some Oregon Trail Laser Cast 350 gr, 405 gr and some of their True Shot 430 gr. Wanting to test out new hunting loads with the 45-70. I think you're gonna have to pick a different powder if you want to load those bullets and want some reliable load data.
Just received a new Marlin 1895 Guide Gun, shot some Remington 405gr with good grouping at 100yrs. Then tried some of my handloads using 405gr LRNFP bullets from Oregon Trail, with 24grs IMR-4198, grouping at 100 yrds was very poor.
